Key facts for investing in steel in Suriname

Why PEB in Suriname

Four reasons to choose industrialized steel

Cold-formed steel (LGS/CFS) and staalconstructie fabricated to millimetric tolerance at our Panama Free Trade Zone hub, protected against tropical corrosion, shipped duty-free via CARICOM and assembled by expert crews in weeks, not months.

Durability

ZAM® anti-corrosion galvanized steel

Paramaribo sees ~2,300–2,400 mm of rain per year and 75–90% relative humidity: severe corrosion conditions. ZAM® steel (zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy, ZAM180) resists wet-dry cycling far better than conventional galvanized steel or tropical timber. Certified to EN 10346.

Logistics

CARICOM route from Panama

Suriname has been a full CARICOM member since 1995. From Centro Industrial PEB (Las Mañanitas) we ship with Maersk via Manzanillo (Panama) to Nieuwe Haven (Paramaribo) on roughly weekly connections, ~5–7 days transit, with CARICOM tariff advantage. Customs coordination with local brokers.

Engineering

Foundations for soft soils

Suriname's coastal plain has soft clays and a high water table. Steel is light relative to concrete, which reduces foundation loads. We design piles or floating slabs based on the site's geotechnical survey, compliant with the Bouwwet 1956 / Bouwbesluit no. 1.

Integration

Fabrication-to-install turnkey

One accountable contractor: Pre-Engineered Buildings Corp from BIM design to installation. Suriname has limited local precision steel fabrication; our CNC cutting (±2 mm) eliminates on-site adjustment and welding. Fixed turnkey price and structural warranty.

Regulatory and climate context

Suriname: tropical rain, humidity and soft soils

Rain and humidity (corrosion)

Paramaribo records ~2,300–2,400 mm of annual precipitation and 75–90% relative humidity. The real challenge is not hurricanes —Suriname lies outside the belt— but corrosion from persistent humidity. ZAM180 or epoxy + polyurethane paint is the technical standard.

→ ZAM galvanizing and sized rainwater drainage

Soft soils and water table

The coastal plain has soft clays and a high water table. Because steel is lighter than concrete, it reduces loads on the foundation. Pile or floating-slab design is set by the site geotechnical survey.

→ Piles or floating slab per geotechnics

Regulatory framework

Construction is governed by the Bouwwet 1956 and Bouwbesluit no. 1, administered by the Ministerie van Openbare Werken (Dienst Bouw- en Woningtoezicht) in Paramaribo. Dutch technical influence is historical; we do not claim formal adoption of the Eurocode as law.

→ Plan approval in Paramaribo (BWT)

Code and engineering compliance

  • Bouwwet 1956 — Suriname Building Act (6 April 1956)
  • Bouwbesluit no. 1 — Building decree (Ministerie van Openbare Werken / BWT)
  • AISC 360-22 — Structural steel design specification
  • AISI S100-16 — Cold-formed steel design and fabrication
  • EN 10346 — Zinc-aluminum-magnesium (ZAM) coatings
  • ISO 9001 · 14001 · 45001 — Quality, environment and safety of fabrication

Project typology

Prefabricated loodsen and buildings in Suriname

Characteristic projects by sector, with use cases, typical dimensions and the specifications required for Suriname's climate and regulations.

⛏️
Mining

Buildings for bauxite and gold

Storage of processed ore, spare parts and chemicals for gold and bauxite operations. 2,000–6,000 m² with high-load floors, chemical resistance and reinforced ZAM. Delivery speed is critical to avoid stalling production.

🛢️
Offshore

Shorebase and storage for Block 58

The GranMorgu project (Block 58, TotalEnergies + APA + Staatsolie, ~USD 10.5 billion, first oil expected 2028) will drive demand for warehouses, onshore supply bases and storage near Paramaribo. Fast structures for the offshore supply chain.

🌾
Agribusiness

Sheds for rice and farm produce

Suriname exports rice (the Nieuw Nickerie region), fruit and timber. Sheds of 1,500–4,000 m² with ventilation, humidity control and forklift access. Galvanized steel that resists persistent tropical humidity.

📦
Paramaribo

Logistics warehouses (magazijn)

Dock and storage capacity in Paramaribo is limited. Warehouses of 3,000–8,000 m² with racking and loading docks for logistics operators that need fast capacity near Nieuwe Haven. Fixed turnkey cost.

🏭
Industry

Bedrijfshal for manufacturing

Buildings for light manufacturing, processing and workshops. 2,000–5,000 m² with robust portal frames. Hybrid system: bolted primary structure (NewCon Steel) + LGS at office levels. Plug-and-play assembly with no on-site welding.

🏢
Commercial

Retail and commercial buildings

Prefabricated structure for retail units, showrooms and offices in Paramaribo. 1,200–3,000 m² with customizable facade. Fast delivery with steel protected for the humid climate.
